Garments (EN471-03 and EN1150 standards)

The EN471 standard specifies a set of requirements for high visibility warning garments for use in the workplace - that is for professional use - and the EN1150 standard provides details of the performance of high visibility warning garments for non-professional* use, together with criteria for minimum areas and placement of reflective material to achieve enhanced conspicuity. Garments conforming to either of these standards are capable of signalling the user's presence visually and intended to provide conspicuity for the user in situations under any light condition, both by day and under illumination by vehicle headlights in the dark.

EN1150: non professional use means when used with any out-door activity i.e. Sporting, bicycling or for children.

Garments (EN471-03) are categorized according to the level of conspicuity they provide:

  • Class 3 garments offer the highest level of protection;
  • Class 2 garments offer an intermediate level of protection; while
  • Class 1 garments provide the lowest level of protection.

Each class has minimum areas of materials incorporated in the garment in accordance EN471-03. Garments comprise the required areas of background material and retro reflective material or alternatively comprise the required area of combined performance material.

EN1150 garments comprise the required areas of background materials and retro reflective materials or alternatively comprise the required area of combined performance material in accordance with specifies minimum areas of exposed material calculated according the height of the wearer.

HUMER and Oppenhejm & Jansson high visibility garments are also certified as conforming to the American national standard for high-visibility safety apparel ANSI/ISEA107-1999. This American standard has been developed by the US Safety Equipment Association and has specifications similar to those of the EN471 standard.
